There was an old Fellow of Trinity. A Doctor well versed in
divinity. But he took to deep thinking and then to deep drinking and
so had to leave the vicinity.

\section{Introduction}

Studies of the development of educational institutions in the United
Kingdom show a strong geographical influence. Cambridge, for example,
was built on the River Cam purely for reasons of physical environment
and the modes of travel available at the time of its founding. When
early this millennium a group of disgruntled scholars from Oxford, en
route to King's Lynne to establish a new university, reached the River
Cam they were sick and tired of sloshing through fens and crossing
rivers. And who could blame them? Sloshing is hard work, especially
when its rarely sunny enough to dry your shoes. So, as no-one could be
faffed negotiating the river and going on to King's Lynne, they
decided to stay put and establish the University on the south bank of
the river.

In this paper we will argue that the geographical proximity of
knowledge, discourse and academic endeavour bourne of such hardship
has resulted in microcosms of society marked by unusual priorities and
values. In particular, we will argue that the said Fellow is simply a
symptomatic victim of a vibrant yet unforgiving intellectual
environment, and should definitely be given a tax break.
