Since its foundation in 1976, the School of Computer
Science & Software Engineering has developed units
and courses that aim to produce graduates with
expertise in programming coupled with in-depth
knowledge of the methods involved in performing
computations and processing data with computers.
The School is well equipped with workstations, and
students are given hands-on experience of a wide
variety of machines during exercise classes and for the
completion of project work.
The School runs four undergraduate laboratories. One
laboratory is equipped with Apple iMacs with 1GB memory
and 17" screens running the Apple OSX operating system.
The other three laboratories are equipped with 3.2GHz
Intel-Pentium IV workstations, each with a 19" LCD
display, and all dual-bootable between the Windows XP
and Linux operating systems. All machines are connected
to our school's Ethernet-based networks, and through
them to the campus network and the wider-Internet. All
the laboratories are air conditioned inside a spacious
modern building.
Students may complete either the Bachelor of
Computer Science (BCompSc), Bachelor of Computer and
Mathematical Sciences (BCM) or the Bachelor of Science
(BSc) with a major in Computer Science, Information
Technology Systems or Information Technology
Applications. These degrees are of three years
duration, with the possibility of an add-on Honours
year. The School also offers the Bachelor of
Engineering BE(Software) degree, which is a four year
degree.
In the
BCompSc, students undertake half of all their
University studies in Computer Science. This degree
caters for those students wishing to combine a strong
background in computer science with applied knowledge
from disciplines like information technology,
information management, electronic commerce and
multimedia applications.
In the
BE (Software Engineering) students study
fundamental knowledge and skills in software
engineering. The BE (Software Engineering) uses the
common first year engineering programme, and offers a
number of electives to students throughout the
course.
In the
BCM, students are enrolled in the Faculty of
Engineering, Computing and Mathematics. They must
complete the prescribed 1st and 2nd year points from
the School of Computer Science & Software
Engineering and Mathematics and Statistics. During
their 3rd year, they must complete two majors. The
first major must be from the School of Computer Science
& Software Engineering or the School of Mathematics
and Statistics. A second major can be taken from a
range of areas including Computer Science, Information
Technology Applications, Information Technology
Systems, Mathematical Sciences, Accounting, Economics,
Information Management, Finance, Management, Chinese,
Indonesian, Japanese, German, French, Italian,
Biochemistry, Geographic Information Systems, or
Linguistics.
In the
BSc, students must complete three years study and
at least one major. The majors must be in the Life and
Physical Sciences Faculty, which gives a very wide
choice of subjects, but there are restrictions on the
number of subjects that may be studied outside the Life
and Physical Sciences Faculty.
