UWA ranks highly on Microsoft Internships

This year, three of the 14 Microsoft internships were offered to students from the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) at UWA.

Each year Microsoft offer a number internships to promising students all over the country, giving them the opportunity to work there and get first-hand experience of “the big world of Microsoft”. Having 3 internships this year, UWA ranks second from all the universities as the University of Queensland was offered 6, both the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales each received 2, and Curtin University, 1.

Being in line for such an internship would have been a nerve-wrecking process: out of the around 300 applications, 80 people were contacted for phone interviews. From these, 36 were flown to Melbourne for a formal interview and only after this, the 14 internships were awarded.

So, congratulations to the new Microsoft interns from UWA: Luke Kim, David Nidorf and Jeffery Palm. The 12 weeks they will be spending in Redmond, Washington, for their internship, will certainly be a life changing experience. According to Oren Nachman, one of our students from CSSE who got a Microsoft internship last year, "the internship's not just about the overseas trip (which is awesome in itself!), but about spending 12 weeks getting hands on experience working on products that are used daily by millions of people worldwide".

MyUWA Launch News Item

MyUWA LogoAs a part of the University’s commitment to improve its services to staff and students the university is today launching MyUWA. MyUWA is a university-wide initiative with the primary aim of “Improving the Student Experience”.

MyUWA is a web portal, or online gateway, that provides users with personalised access to important applications and information services, essential to study and research at UWA.

MyUWA is intended to become the “one stop shop” for access to the university’s online services; for example MyUWA will allow students to create a personalised gateway to:

  • read and send email from the student email system;
  • link to a unit’s WebCT course, CMO list or Lectopia recordings;
  • check your personal timetable for lecture and tutorial times;
  • review your Internet usage quota;
  • upload and download files from your student storage area;
  • read news and official university announcements;
  • review the items you have on loan from the Library, and see if any are due for return;
  • search for books or journal articles using many of the Library’s search tools, including the catalogue and SuperSearch;
  • add personal bookmarks and RSS news feeds;
  • plus much more...

MyUWA is intended to become the central point for official communications, email, search, discussion groups, syndicated content (e.g. weather, news, announcements) and links to tailored information for students. MyUWA will provide a student-friendly online experience, delivering relevant information and services to meet the needs of the current generation of students.

The University is committed to improving the breadth of services that it provides to staff and students through MyUWA. While MyUWA has been initially targeted at the student population it is expected that staff research and administration functions will be catered for in the near future.

MyUWA is available right now at: http://www.uwa.edu.au/myuwa

Users of MyUWA are encouraged to submit their suggestions and comments by email to portal-help@uwa.edu.au or via the Support portlet within the MyUWA portal itself.
