Seminar

Detecting Cancer in Human Breast Lymph Nodes with Optical Coherence Tomography

Dr Robert McLaughlin, (EECE)

11am 18th July, Seminar Room 1.24

Abstract

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an emerging high-resolution medical imaging modality that offers new possibilities for assessment of breast cancer. In breast cancer, the lymphatic system is a common route for metastasis. This talk will describe the application of OCT to the imaging of breast lymph nodes. It will explain the basics of OCT, the importance of lymph node assessment, and the ability of OCT to distinguish micro-architectural structures in lymph nodes. We will also discuss methods to create miniaturised OCT probes which may be placed in a biopsy needle for deeper imaging.
