Image Acquisition and Analysis Facility (UWA)
Date: Wednesday 18 March, 1998
Time: 2.15pm

Abstract

The Image Acquisition and Analysis Facility (IAAF) has been established by a grant from the lotteries commission. Our aim is aid and augment research in the state for the benefit of the people of WA.

We have equipment and expertise catering for a variety of uses.

Computers: we are fully networked cross-platform computer lab and have PC's, a Macintosh and Unix based Silicon graphics workstations.

Image acquisition: The centre has microscopes and several special digital cameras for image acquisition. We also have high resolution flatbed and 35mm slide scanners.

Image manipulation and publication: We have image manipulation programs linking in with web and print production programs. We also have a CD writer for archiving people's image and datafiles. The CD writer is also useful for writing Multimedia productions to disk.

Image analysis: we have a range of software, from easy-to-use programs catering for standard image analysis functions, to a modular programmable software package, (called AVS) which can import C++ programs and is able to produce its own interfaces. We use Silicon Graphics workstations for high-end image analysis and 3D visualisations

The people: The facility has two directors: Dr Stuart Bunt and Prof Miranda Grounds, lecturers in Anatomy and Human Biology. Dr Hugo Bouckaert is the computer Support Officer and Image analysis consultant. Nguyen Ly is our programmer, and Oron Catts is our Multimedia artist and designer.

At present we are setting up several image-analysis research projects, such as developing an image-based identification system based on the structure of the eye and software for automated karotyping. We are continuously involved with producing web-based teaching material, poster productions and performing image analysis on data sets. We would like to expand our services within UWA as well as in the wider academic and business community.
