Research Seminar - June 7, 2000

Seminar Announcement

Title: Lecture 1: The Mirror System Hypothesis
Speaker: Professor Michael Arbib

Adjunct Professor of Computer Science
Date: Wednesday 7th June, 2000
Time: 2.00 - 4.00 pm
Venue: Seminar Room 1.24

Abstract

This lecture will present data on the mirror system for grasping in monkeys in relation to Broca's area in humans to ground the hypothesis that a mirror system for grasping provides the key to a new theory of the role of hand gestures in the evolution of human communication. This material (based on the papers by Rizzolatti and Arbib) will be augmented by a brief discussion of current modeling efforts which (i) address the development of the mirror system in both infant monkeys and human infants and (ii) relate models of monkey neural circuitry to studies of human brain imaging.
