Research Seminar - October 15, 2001

Seminar Announcement

Title: On correspondence between continuous contours and their digital representation.
Speaker: Dr Andrzej Sluzek
  Nanyang Technological University (Singapore)
Associate Professor in School of Computer Engineering
and
Deputy Director of the Robotics Research Centre
Date: Monday 15th October, 2001
Time: 4.00pm
Venue: Room 1.24

Abstract:

Two problems regarding correspondence between continuous contours and their representation will be discussed. Both problems are only partially solved so that proposals of the future research topics are an important part of the seminar.

The first problem is:

* How fragments of digital contours can be matched to certain contour primitives?
Junctions with multiple arms will be discussed as an example, and two alternative matching techniques will be discussed. The first technique is based on a simplified Radon transform, while the second one utilises moment expressions.

The second problem is:

* How moments of digital contours can be used to estimate properties of the original continuous contours?
Some basic theorems will be presented, and their prospective applications will be discussed (including some open questions).
