Language as an Oro-Facial/Manual/Vocal Complex

Abstract:

The talk will offer an integrated view of brain mechanisms for language which is placed in an evolutionary context in which protosign and protospeech develop in an expanding spiral to create a language-ready brain. A comparative view of the brain mechanisms of monkey and human will complemented by a review of brain imaging studies on speech versus pantomime versus sign by Karen Emmorey of the Salk Institute and other experts on signed languages.
