What is this linux thing?

A brief overview of linux is available via the current lab manual. That should give you an idea of how to get around and some of the basic commands.

How can I access my linux files from outside?

Can I access my windows files from within linux?

It should be possible to do this under Samba using smbmount, but currently this appears to be problematic. Hopefully this will be changing in the near future. Feel free to try if you want to.
