General Network Questions

General network related questions

This section covers questions that do not have their own section and fall under the category of network related.

How can I get access network access from the labs to outside?

Basically you can't. We provide a proxy for http traffic, the labs can connect to PARNet, but anything additional isn't supported. You may be able to do some fancy things with tunnelling and the like, but we will not guarentee that it will work; we will not maintain it; and it may stop working without notice.

I want to run napster/kazaa/IRC/ftp/AIM/ICQ/MSN/etc from my local account but it won't work

No it won't. Students are not permitted to install software on the lab machines. The machines are also on a restricted subnet meaning that even if you were able to have an installed copy you are restricted as to what you can access. Many of those programs are used for dubious purposes, students caught attempting to run them may be asked to explain what they were trying to accomplish.

Can I plug in my laptop/notebook/desktop/etc?

No. Students are not permitted to plug into the wired network in the building. Anyone caught trying to do so will have their access revoked.

How can I connect my laptop?

The school does have a wireless network which is part of the UWA SNAP network. Students are permitted to use this. The school does not provide support for this network. If you are having problems please see UCS.

What about email access?

Computer Science currently does not provide email accounts for undergraduates. All students are given a central email account by UCS when they enrol. Any email destined for a student is automatically redirected by Computer Science to their UCS account. For more information on this, please see:
