Interested in Postgraduate Study
in CSSE?
Whether you're already a UWA
graduate, or have completed your undergraduate study at another
institution, we welcome your interest in postgraduate study in
Computer Science and Software Engineering.
The School of Computer Science
and Software Engineering offers the research degrees of Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) and Masters by Research, and the graduate
coursework degrees, Master of
Information Technology and Master of
Computer Science, as well as graduate diplomas, graduate
certificates and jointly taught masters programmes.
Masters and PhD
graduates are in high
demand by employers for their generic or transferable skills, as
well as their advanced knowledge of computer science and software
engineering. Successful completion of a postgraduate degree
indicates to a prospective employer that you have excellent
project and personal management skills, and that you can think
independently and critically, solve problems and communicate
effectively.
Which postgraduate degree?
Postgraduate Research
Degrees involve 2 to 4 years full-time
research under the guidance of a supervisor in the School of
Computer Science and Software Engineering. As a world-class
research university, UWA offers exciting opportunities for higher
degree research programs. A Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD) or Master of Science
(MSc) degree provides a
unique opportunity to follow your interest in an area of
research, to focus on this for several years and make an
important contribution to the development of your chosen research
area. The focus is on your capacity for creative, independent
research, critical thinking, time and project management and
problem-solving, and you will also need to have, or to develop,
excellent skills of organisation and
communication of information.
For entry, candidates need to
demonstrate that CSSE can provide appropriate
supervision,
facilities and resources for their proposed research, and
that they meet the
eligibility requirements. There are usually no examinable
coursework components to a PhD or Masters by
Research.

Postgraduate Coursework
Degrees involve up to 2 years of advanced study. The
Master of Information Technology (MIT)
is a new degree designed for graduates of another discipline who
wish to move into IT or combine IT with skills from another
discipline, and moves quickly from foundational material through
to advanced coursework material. Shorter Graduate
Diploma and Graduate
Certificate programmes are also available. The
Master of Computer Science (MCS) is
targeted towards students who already have a strong computing
background and involves both coursework and a research project.
It caters for software professionals wishing to update and
broaden their foundation knowledge and skills, and for computer
science students wishing to extend their academic background or
enter research.
To qualify for entry to the MIT
candidates must hold a bachelor's degree majoring in a discipline
other than information technology or computer science, with an
average mark of 60 per cent or better, or equivalent. To qualify
for entry to the MCS candidates require a bachelor's degree in
computer science, software engineering or information technology
with an average mark of 60 per cent or better in the final 48
points of computer science units, or equivalent.
