Abstract
Bioinformatics, or computational molecular biology, is an
interdisciplinary area born from the necessity to deal with the
exponential growth of all types of biological (molecular) data:
to collect, organise, store, transfer and analyse. It forms a
synergy between the biological, physical and information
sciences, in particular molecular biology, biotechnology,
information technology and computer science. From an IT/CS
perspective, Bioinformatics aims to devise new computational
methods and algorithms as well as propose and implement
effective information systems to process biological data. From
a biological perspective, Bioinformatics is now recognised as
integral to understanding biological, functional and
evolutionary significance of the molecular data. In this talk,
I will provide an overview of the Bioinformatics area and
describe some of my bioinformatics research. |
