Abstract
The Internet and advanced computer and communications technology are having
a dramatic impact on how business processes are conducted. "Electronic
Commerce" is the term that has gained popular currency to describe the
conduct of business transactions using computer and communications
technologies and there is an increasing demand for graduates who have
knowledge and abilities in the development and management of e-commerce
applications.
The group of Information Systems units that have been introduced into the
IM major in recent years cover the core components of Information Systems
curricula and their content has kept pace with the rapid advances in
information technology. These units are therefore well placed to form the
basis of a new major in Electronic Commerce.
The major will be based on a group of Information Systems units within the
current Information Management major and will include two new units
"Foundations in Electronic Commerce" available in 2000 and a third year
unit "Advanced Electronic Commerce" available in 2001.
The presentation will discuss the focus of this major, the motivation for
its introduction, its scope - where it fits in the teaching offered by IMM
- and associated faculties. Various research initiatives will also be
discussed.
