Abstract

A major dream of the designers of the World Wide Web is that it should be possible to send a receive information without human intervention. Recently the World Wide Web Consortium has developed a family of protocols ("XML") which go some way towards making this possible. There has been much hype that XML will revolutionise business processes and consortia and companies have sprung up based on this vision. But reliable information exchange is difficult often because of the different meanings that are put on words and data. This will be a non-technical overview of some of the issues involved in trying to develop the technology and the culture that enables this.
