Research Seminar - November 5, 2004
Surveillance Video Is Useless
Time: 11am, Friday 5th November
Computer Science & Software Engineering
Seminar Room 1.24
Speaker:
Dr Peter Kovesi
Senior Lecturer
Abstract:
We have all seen those fuzzy images of criminals on Crime Stoppers.
This talk will show why these images are so fuzzy and why they are
doomed to be almost useless for identification. I will explain some
of the basic statistical issues involved in biometric
identification. The requirements for reliable identification are far
more stringent than what you might first think. I will then briefly
cover our knowledge (or lack of knowledge) of how well iris
recognition, fingerprints, and face recognition meet these
requirements.
