Research Seminar - September 17, 2004
Network Management and Automation
Time: 11am Friday September 17
Computer Science & Software Engineering
Seminar Room 1.24
Speaker:
Alex Dawson
Abstract:
Local Area Network (LAN) management need not be a troublesome task. During early 2004,
The University of WA's School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering implemented
a major network upgrade, replacing a mixture of network hardware, some up to 10 years old,
with new Cisco switches and routers. This seminar will cover the new technologies this has
allowed them to use, open source and homebrew software used for management, and how these
have all helped in the streamlining of day to day network infrastructure and knowledge management.
Alex Dawson is a Systems and Network Administrator from UWA's School of Electrical, Electronic
and Computer Engineering, where he has been employed since 2001. Prior to this, he worked from
his home in Perth on a contract basis for a web development company in Mississippi, USA, doing
Perl, PHP and SQL development. He holds a BSc from Edith Cowan in Security Management, with a
minor in Computer Science completed at The University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada
