Establishing A Reference Datum Point For Software Measurement

Vanessa Wee Bui Lin

25th July 10am, Seminar Room 1.24

Abstract

Software measurement has widely been used in software project estimations and measuring project performance, such as estimating the development cost, measuring the quality and productivities of the software projects. The reliability and validity of the data in a metrics repository determines the quality of data analysis derived from its datasets. Software metrics repository with poor quality datasets produce bad analysis results which could risk the company with a great loss in business, for example inaccurate project estimations, inappropriate management strategies or technical decisions made, misleading self performance analysis and so forth. Therefore, it is essential to reduce the variations in the dataset to minimum level to ensure the quality of the repository.

This research aims to create a standard software project to provide a standard datum point for benchmarking the performance of software project and to improve software project estimations. In addition, through the implementation of standard software project, set of metrics will be collected based on set of well-defined metrics to eliminate variation in the data. Consequently it increases the reliability and validity of the data in the repository, so to ensure the data compatibility in data analysis process as it is performed using the common units.
