The systems team maintains the School servers and performs routine backups, but their focus is on disaster recovery.
It is therefore always a user's duty to take responsibility for their own data protection.
Multiple copies of user data are maintained, as is the ability to quickly change servers, resulting in minimal downtime.
Both the Windows and Linux home areas are regularly backed up to disk. A master copy of this information is taken at key times of the year, enabling snapshots to be recreated if needed.
Individual machines are not backed up by default, although staff and postgraduates can request that their PCs be included in the backups system. Please be aware there is a limit to the amount of backup storage available. (Current monthly backups are approaching two terabytes of data)
Important data should not be stored on your PC hard drive. You should consider the hard drive on your PC as "temporary storage" and accept that any information stored there may be lost. Important data should be stored in your home directory on the servers as these are mirrored and backed up with both daily incremental and weekly full backups.
If you have requested that your PC be included in the backup system, we will only do daily incremental backups of the directories you have specified.
