Information about the School's end-on honours courses (BCM, BCompSci, and BSc), and the fourth-year Bachelor of Engineering (Software Engineering) course.
If you recently completed the requirements for your undergraduate pass degree and wish to enter (BCM, BCompSci or BSc) end-on honours, complete an application form to enter the program. Forms are available from Student Administration or from an administrative officer in Room 1.31 of the Computer Science building.
Completed applications should be returned to the School office by mid-December. Late applications may still be considered.
Do not attempt to enrol into the honours program until you receive a letter from Student Administration advising you to do so.
Take your student card with you everywhere in the Computer Science building. You need it. If you have any problems, see the secretary in Room 1.31A.
All fourth-year students are housed in the Honours/Masters lab – Lab 2.07 of the Computer Science building. You will have exclusive use of this lab, which has a number of different PCs and a printer, except during scheduled laboratory sessions for certain fourth-year units. You will not have a permanent seat or position in the room for the whole year, so be happy to share with your fellows. If you want to change the lab layout slightly, speak to the fourth-year coordinator first.
Your card also allows access to Labs 2.01, 2.03, 2.05 and 2.07, the photocopier and library rooms on the 1st floor and your research lab.
Building "lock-downs" occur between 6 pm and 8 am on weekdays and between 6 pm Fridays and 8 am Mondays.
New information regarding fourth-year programs will be posted here and on the fourth-year web pages.
Paper mail will also be placed in the fourth-year mailbox, located just outside the Staff Room on the first floor. Check your email daily; it is by far the most frequently used medium for communicating with all fourth-year students.
The laser printers are there for you to use, but please do so with a view to keeping costs in check.
The Honours/Masters lab photocopier must only be used for copying material directly related to your work in the School. Copyright laws must be adhered to. For any large jobs (say more than 50 pages), you must first obtain approval from your supervisor, then see the School Manager to arrange access.
Private (paid) copying is only permitted if the School Manager agrees. Do not turn the photocopier off.
The School has a small library in room 1.27 (accessed with your security card). It contains a collection of journals and proceedings as well as past honours and graduate diploma dissertations, and MSc and PhD theses.
Most of this material may be borrowed, provided that you fill in your name and the book or journal details in the red log-book provided. Note that this material supplements the material that is available in the Science Library.
